What’s the Buzz – Old Holland Classic Oil Colours

Being an oil painter and the owner of The Sydney Art Store iv use pretty much every paint brand on the market… one of a few that stand out is of course Old Holland Oils. I know a number of my clients cant stop raving about them even with the Ferrari price tag - then again they well could possibly be the Ferrari of oil paints if you ask me.

Not sure if you guys are aware but Old holland was established in 1664 and is the worlds oldest artists’ paint manufacturer! They’ve been making paint so long, most artists trust them intrinsically. Even the finest painters such as Van Gogh, Vermeer, Van Ruysdael and other dutch master painters used Old Holland. And why not, their colours are almost completely lightfast, are free of any cheap fillers or artificial driers and have a great concentration of pigments. All this together gives Old Holland’s colours great covering power, brilliant colour strength and intensity.

Having used the brand and still using i can not fault it …to a certain point that is.

  • If you are an artist who love to mix every colour and want the best results every time whilst painting those glazes on your masterpiece - then look no further .. they are pricing but great value for money as you wont need much paint to achieve what you are after.
  • On the other hand if you are a crazy painter like myself who attacks the canvas with litres and litres of paint this is probably the worst paint you could buy as you need to remortgage your house to paint a show ...but using those high key colours for the final layers is worth every cent.

Have a say below and tell us what you think & whats your favourite oil paint brand to use.
